I'm a lawyer, a mom, and a professional excuse-maker for buying plane tickets.
I live just outside Washington, D.C., in Arlington, Virginia, where I own a law firm. But when I'm not practicing law, there's a pretty good chance I'm planning my next trip somewhere. I've always been fascinated by places that feel authentic, a little chaotic, full of history, and packed with stories. Istanbul checks every one of those boxes.
Ironically, I didn't go there because I was obsessed with Turkey. I went because I wanted elective lens replacement surgery. Glamorous, right? It turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. The surgery was flawless, I ditched my glasses, and I accidentally fell in love with an entire city.
I kept going back.
Every trip, Istanbul pulled me in a little more. I learned which restaurants were worth crossing the city for and which famous ones were overrated. I found hammams I couldn't wait to revisit. I discovered neighborhoods where almost no tourists wandered. I figured out the ferries, the trams, the bazaars, the rooftop bars, and the beauty clinics. I learned when to bargain, when not to, and why accepting that little glass of tea is almost always a good idea.
Before long, friends started calling with the same questions.

Everyone has seen the pictures of the Grand Bazaar. What the photos don't show is that it's loud, chaotic, fascinating, overwhelming, and honestly... a little exhausting if you don't know what you're walking into.
Think of it less as a shopping mall and more as a living, breathing city that happens to be indoors. There are thousands of shops selling everything from handmade ceramics and carpets to fake designer handbags, gold jewelry, spices, lamps, antiques, and souvenirs. Some vendors genuinely create beautiful artisan products. Others are selling the exact same thing as the next ten shops. Haggling is expected, tea is frequently offered, and you'll probably hear "My friend!" more times than you can count. Go with an open mind, take your time, don't feel pressured to buy anything, and remember that wandering is half the fun.
You don't have to be a soccer fan to appreciate what it means in Istanbul.
The city lives and breathes football. On match days, entire neighborhoods change. Cafés fill up hours before kickoff, jerseys appear everywhere, and the energy is contagious. Whether it's Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, or Beşiktaş, the rivalries are passionate in a way that's hard to explain until you've experienced it.
If you have the opportunity to attend a match, do it. Even if you don't know the rules. The atmosphere alone is worth it. The singing, chanting, fireworks, and nonstop crowd energy make it one of the most memorable nights you'll have in Turkey.
Turkey is a Muslim-majority country, but Istanbul is a very international city, and alcohol is widely available.
You'll find excellent wine, local beers, craft cocktail bars, rooftop lounges overlooking the Bosphorus, and restaurants where enjoying a glass of wine with dinner is completely normal. The national spirit is rakı, an anise-flavored liquor that's traditionally shared over a long meal with friends. It's definitely an acquired taste, but trying it once is practically a rite of passage.
One thing that surprises many visitors is the price. Alcohol is heavily taxed in Turkey, so cocktails and wine often cost more than people expect. Water, tea, and fresh juices are much cheaper by comparison.
A Turkish hammam isn't just a spa treatment—it's a centuries-old tradition.
Expect warm marble, steam, lots of bubbles, and a scrub that will remove enough dead skin to make you question whether you've ever actually been clean before. It's relaxing, a little intimidating the first time, and one of those experiences people talk about for years afterward.
There are luxury hammams where everything feels like a five-star spa, and there are historic neighborhood hammams where locals have been coming for generations. Both are wonderful experiences. Just don't be surprised if your attendant isn't particularly interested in your modesty—they've seen thousands of people before you, and they're simply there to do their job.
Turkey uses the Turkish Lira, and while credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, you'll definitely want to carry some cash.
Cash comes in handy for taxis, tips, small cafés, markets, and neighborhood shops. ATMs are everywhere, and they're generally the easiest way to get local currency. Like anywhere, it's smart to let your bank know you're traveling before you leave.
One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is assuming every price is fixed. In restaurants and stores, it usually is. In markets and souvenir shops, negotiating is often part of the experience. Be polite, smile, and don't take it personally—it's simply part of the culture.
Istanbul is enormous. It's one of the biggest cities in the world, and traffic can be... legendary.
The good news is that public transportation is excellent. Trams, ferries, metros, buses, and funiculars connect most of the city, and they're inexpensive and easy to use once you get the hang of them. Ferries, in particular, aren't just transportation—they're one of the best sightseeing experiences in the city.
For shorter trips, taxis and ride apps are common, but traffic can dramatically change travel times. Sometimes walking or taking the tram is actually much faster.
After a long international flight, the last thing you want to do is negotiate with taxi drivers, figure out currency, or try explaining your hotel address in a language you don't speak.
A pre-arranged driver means someone is waiting for you, knows exactly where you're going, and gets you there safely. No guessing, no confusion, and no wondering whether you're being taken the long way around. It's one of the simplest upgrades you can make to your trip, and it's worth every penny.

If you've spent any time online, you've probably seen people traveling to Istanbul for cosmetic procedures. There's a reason for that.
The city has developed an international reputation for high-quality cosmetic surgery, dentistry, dermatology, hair restoration, injectables, medical spas, and advanced skincare—all often at a fraction of U.S. prices. But not every clinic is created equal.
There are world-class physicians in Istanbul, and there are clinics you should absolutely avoid. That's why doing your homework—or working with someone who already knows the landscape—is so important. The goal isn't simply finding the cheapest option. Turkish breakfast isn't really breakfast. It's an event.
Instead of eggs and toast on one plate, your table gradually fills with dozens of small dishes—fresh cheeses, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, honey, jams, butter, breads, pastries, eggs prepared several ways, yogurt, fruit, and endless tea. You'll be offered tea constantly—in hotels, carpet shops, jewelry stores, waiting rooms, salons, offices, and sometimes just because someone wants to be welcoming. It's served in the iconic tulip-shaped glasses, usually strong, usually hot, and almost always without milk.
Accepting a glass of tea isn't just about having something to drink. It's part of Turkish hospitality. Conversations happen over tea. Business happens over tea. Friendships begin over tea. Before long, you'll probably find yourself reaching for another glass without even thinking about it.
Yes, eat the kebabs. But don't stop there.
Try fresh grilled fish by the Bosphorus, pide (often called Turkish pizza), lahmacun, meze spreads, stuffed grape leaves, lentil soup, roasted eggplant dishes, simit from a street vendor, fresh pomegranate juice, pistachio baklava, and as much fresh produce as you can. Turkish cuisine is incredibly diverse, and every neighborhood has its own specialties.
As for what to avoid, the biggest mistake is eating only in restaurants that cater to tourists. Some of the best meals you'll have will be in places with simple plastic chairs, handwritten menus, and families eating right alongside you. That's where you'll often find the food locals actually come back for again and again.
